Carnaval in Penonomé–Nighttime

Carnaval at night is completely different than the partying and water spraying during the heat of the day. The atmosphere is still very festive, but now the crowds are lined up on the streets to watch the Province Carnaval Queen come by on an elaborate float, along with many others. There are also many bands with great carnaval music, and plenty of food.

Carnaval in Penonomé–Daytime

Carnavales is held every year in Panama the weekend before Ash Wednesday. I can’t say that I understand all aspects of the festival, but then again, Panamanians are quick to point out that there are some celebrations in the states that they don’t quite understand. Water is a big part of carnaval whether you are in the capital, or the interior. It is the dry season, it’s hot, and water is typically in short demand this time of year.

Taboga Island and the Trail of the Three Crosses

I heard of the legend of the three crosses many years ago when I first visited Isla Taboga. Supposedly, somewhere deep in the hilly jungle were the graves of three pirates, killed by the villagers centuries before. I used to spend a lot of time in the jungle, and I would come to Taboga to heal, not hike. So I never checked out the rumors. But those days are behind me now. A few years ago while visiting the island, my daughter and I headed into the jungle to see if the legend was true. I didn’t have a camera with me then, but we did find a gravesite and there are three crosses. I recently went back, this time, better prepared…
